But despite the change in tone on the later half, I still think they coud've done much more with the characters and their interactions. For me, in the beginning Sho, Sara, Sig, Seiji and Sumire felt like a Super Sentai team, even though not all of them actively took part in the action, each one had their important role. However, as you mentioned, Sara eventually became a background character, and if they had just disappeared with Seiji and Sumire midway, their absence wouldn't make any difference in the last 20 or so episodes.
